Public invited to show their support for service members at events throughout the city, May 15 - 20
Milwaukee, May 7, 2017…Dr. Thomas Buck and Captain Amy B. Cocanour, Commander, Sector Lake Michigan, U.S. Coast Guard, will serve respectively as the civilian and military co-chairs of Milwaukee’s Annual Armed Forces Week, to be held May 15 - 20, 2017. The week’s events aim to increase public awareness of the role of the military, while honoring and providing a memorable tribute of respect to our nation’s heroes, both past and present. Throughout the week, events will feature distinguished guest speakers such as Congressman Mike Gallagher; Brigadier General Brian E. Winski USA; Colonel John C. Scherer USAF; Wisconsin’s Rolling Bike leader Ken Pezewski; and Curtiss Peck, Executive Director of the Fisher House. In addition, three crew members from the USS Milwaukee (LCS 5) will be in attendance on Monday’s events and other events throughout the week.
Kicking off Armed Forces Week on Thursday, May 11, at 7 a.m. is a media orientation flight at the 128th Air Refueling Wing based at Milwaukee’s General Mitchell Airport. This event offers media the opportunity to witness a KC-135R Stratotanker refuel a receiver aircraft while in flight. Monday, May 15
On Monday, the annual Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) Breakfast will be held at 7 a.m. at the Milwaukee County War Memorial Center, 750 N. Lincoln Memorial Drive. At the breakfast, military reservists, who are also employees of Milwaukee-based companies, and their employers will be recognized and the Major Richard I. Bong Award will be presented to outstanding service members from each military branch. Also on Monday, The Milwaukee North Shore Rotary Club will host a luncheon at the Four Points by Sheraton Milwaukee North, 8900 N. Kildeer Court, Brown Deer. Guest Speaker is Brigadier General Brian Winski. Lunch will be served at noon, followed by a program. No charge for Military (Active and Reserve) in uniform. All others, $15.00.
The traditional Milwaukee Armed Forces Week Dinner, which is sold out, is the featured event of the week, and will take place on Monday, May 15, at 5:30 p.m. at the Wisconsin Club, located at 900 W. Wisconsin Avenue. Attending as a special guest speaker at the dinner is Congressman Mike Gallagher. The keynote speaker is Brigadier General Brian E. Winski USA. Charles Mulcahy, co-founder of the Veterans Community Relations Team, will receive the Milwaukee Armed Services Committee’s Eighth Annual Citizen Support for Our Armed Services Award at the banquet, honoring him for his commitment to promoting and protecting the legacy of General MacArthur and all who have served. The Gary Wetzel Award, in honor of Wisconsin Medal of Honor recipient Gary Wetzel, will be awarded posthumously to the parents of Matthew V. Thompson, Green Beret Staff Sergeant, formerly of Brookfield, Wisconsin; and to Boatswains Mate Second Class Brian Cross, US Coast Guard. Thompson was killed in action in Afghanistan on August 23, 2016. Cross is honored for saving lives on Lake Michigan..
Tuesday, May 16
The Rotary Club of Milwaukee Luncheon will take place at noon on Tuesday, May 16. Captain Amy Coconaur, AFW Co-chair, will speak.
Wednesday, May 17
On Wednesday, May 17, the Kiwanis Club of Downtown Milwaukee will host a luncheon featuring speaker Colonel James Locke, Vice Commander of the 128th Air Refueling Wing.
Both the Rotary Club Luncheon and the Kiwanis Club Luncheon will be held at the Milwaukee County War Memorial Center, 750 N. Lincoln Memorial Drive, and both will admit members of the military and reserve in uniform free of charge.
Thursday, May 18
The Lance Sijan Award Ceremony and Luncheon will take place at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, May 18. At the luncheon, awards will be presented to four distinguished veteran heroes. The ceremony and luncheon will be held at the Milwaukee Yacht Club, 1700 N. Lincoln Memorial Drive. Honored this year are Col. James A. Schumacher, US Marine Corps (Vietnam); Corporal Willie McLain, USMC (Iwo Jima/WWII); Corporal Glenn Dohrmann, US Army (Korea); and Ralph Windler, European Theater, WWII.
