Milwaukee, May 9, 2018… Dr. Thomas Buck; Captain Thomas Stuhlreyer, Commander of Coast Guard Sector Lake Michigan and Colonel James Locke, Wing Commander of the 128th Air Refueling Wing will serve respectively as the civilian and military co-chairs of Milwaukee’s Annual Armed Forces Week, to be held May 14 - 19, 2018. The week’s events aim to increase public awareness of the role of the military, while honoring and providing a memorable tribute of respect to our nation’s heroes, both past and present. Throughout the week, events will feature distinguished guest speakers such as Lt. Gen. Daniel Leaf; Dr. Daniel S. Zomchek, Director of Milwaukee VA Hospital; and Captain Thomas Stuhlreyer, USCG.
Monday, May 14
On Monday, the annual Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) Breakfast will be held at 7 a.m. at the Milwaukee County War Memorial Center, 750 N. Lincoln Memorial Drive. At the breakfast, military reservists, who are also employees of Milwaukee-based companies, and their employers will be recognized and the Major Richard I. Bong Award will be presented to outstanding service members from each military branch. Also on Monday, The Milwaukee North Shore Rotary Club will host a luncheon at the Four Points by Sheraton Milwaukee North, 8900 N. Kildeer Court, Brown Deer. Guest Speaker is Lt. Gen. Daniel Leaf, USAF (Retired). Lunch will be served at noon, followed by a program. No charge for Military (Active and Reserve) in uniform. All others, $15.00.
The traditional Milwaukee Armed Forces Week Dinner, which is sold out, is the featured event of the week, and will take place on Monday, May 14, at 5:30 p.m. at the Wisconsin Club, located at 900 W. Wisconsin Avenue. The keynote speaker is Lieutenant General Daniel Leaf, USAF (Retired). Bob “Mr. Baseball” Uecker, baseball hall-of-famer and award-winning sports broadcaster, will receive the Milwaukee Armed Services Committee’s Ninth Annual Citizen Support for Our Armed Services Award at the banquet, honoring him for for featuring and supporting members of the Armed Forces at every opportunity throughout his career. The Gary Wetzel Award, in honor of Wisconsin Medal of Honor recipient Gary Wetzel, will be awarded to 1st Sergeant Eric Pentek, USMC; and to Colonel Peter D. Buck, USMC.
Tuesday, May 15
The Rotary Club of Milwaukee Luncheon will take place at noon on Tuesday, May 15. Dr. Daniel S. Zomchek, Director of Milwaukee VA Hospital will speak.
Wednesday, May 16
On Wednesday, May 16, the Kiwanis Club of Downtown Milwaukee will host a luncheon featuring speaker Captain Thomas Stuhlreyer, USCG.
Both the Rotary Club Luncheon and the Kiwanis Club Luncheon will be held at the Milwaukee County War Memorial Center, 750 N. Lincoln Memorial Drive, and both will admit members of the military and reserve in uniform free of charge.
Thursday, May 17
The Lance Sijan Award Ceremony and Luncheon will take place at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, May 17. At the luncheon, awards will be presented to four distinguished veteran heroes. The ceremony and luncheon will be held at the Milwaukee Yacht Club, 1700 N. Lincoln Memorial Drive.
